A founder of MZS, Yuri Monastyrsky has extremely broad experience in Dispute Resolution, Securities, Intellectual Property, Taxation, Financial Services, Insolvency, Real Estate, Anti-trust, Transport, White-collar Crime as well as general corporate law.

o Member of International Law Association
o Member of Moscow Bar

Moscow State Institute of International Relations (University) of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia, Department of Private International and Civil Law, 1990 (dissertation subject: “Dominating choice of law doctrines in the USA”);

Candidate of legal sciences in the Institute of State and Law of The Russian Academy of Sciences, 1999.

Dispute Resolution Law Practice:

Since 2004, his firm has been rated the leader in dispute resolution by various leading international law surveys and journals – evidenced by the fact that it has successfully represented corporations and organisations as diverse as Gazprom, EBRD, Svyazinvest, IKEA and etc. in disputes involving billions of dollars. These high rankings have been earned through the firm’s continuous success in complex multi-jurisdictional disputes.

The only way to become a truly great litigator – with all that entails, from quick wits and outstanding public speaking ability to scrupulous preparation, analytical skills and lateral thinking – is to spend time in court. On average, his firm has a lawyer in the Russian courts, tribunals (from the trial courts to the highest appellate courts) every working day of the year.

His innovative approach to dispute resolution combined with solid academic background allowed to repeatedly achieve success in cases that discouraged other litigators. He remains committed to these principles while keeping up with the highest international standards of legal services.

Monastyrsky, Zyuba, Stepanov & Partners:

His firm is built on a group of driven, dynamic and intellectually focused people who are pleasant and inspiring to work with. It invests heavily in broadening their skills and knowledge to ensure success when working across multiple jurisdictions and cultures.

In addition to clients, the firm also works with many of the world’s leading international law firms, delivering specialist expertise and services that are either not available or not practical for them to deliver themselves.

He strives to put the huge intellectual capital within MZS to good use for the benefit of the legal and wider commercial worlds. To date lawyers from the firm have authored more than 100 publications, covering a wide variety of topics – helping to shape, not just debate, Russian law itself.

He maintains extremely close links with Russian academia. Not only does this enable to share knowledge and experiences, but also to identify and recruit the bright young stars of tomorrow.

He provides pro bono services (and financial contributions) to a range of good causes including the Moscow Journal of International Law, as well as The Fund of Grateful Alumni of the MGIMO International Law School. He is a key participant in the events held by the Association of Russian Corporate Lawyers; and he also sponsors various student moot courts around the world, helping the next generation get a taste of the legal profession.
Through a charitable foundation Yuri Monastyrsky supports one of the leading doctrinal periodical in Russia, The Journal of Civil Law.
