Dave is a partner in the firm’s commercial group. He has a particular focus on energy and resources, with extensive experience in oil and gas (upstream and downstream), coal, electricity (generation, transmission and supply), alternative energy sources, and climate change. His other main practice area is mergers and acquisitions.
Dave also has considerable “in-house” experience, as General Counsel for Solid Energy New Zealand and General Manager, Legal & Risk for the New Zealand Racing Board/TAB. This experience has shaped Dave’s client approach, giving him valuable insight into business drivers and the role that legal advice has to play.
Natural Resources Law Practice:
Simpson Grierson is the legal partner of choice for the New Zealand energy and resources sector.
Our lawyers provide market-leading advice to clients across the whole of this sector: oil and gas (upstream, production, wholesale and retail), LPG, electricity, minerals (coal, gold, hard rock aggregates), and renewable energy. Our clients include the Crown, major international and New Zealand corporates, and industry bodies.
Our energy practice extends across all practices of the firm: corporate, commercial, banking, construction, employment, resource management consenting, and litigation. We advise on a range of acquisitions, project structures, joint ventures, securities issues (including both private placements and public offers of securities), foreign investment approvals (where needed), and risk allocation issues. We also advise on day-to-day operational issues and regulatory matters.
For upstream and minerals participants, we engage with New Zealand Petroleum & Minerals and advise clients on the applications process, permitting, and royalty regimes under the Crown Minerals Act. We are involved in most of New Zealand’s significant upstream oil and gas exploration and development projects (including the Maui, Pohokura, and Kupe gas fields and the Maari and Tui oil fields).
Simpson Grierson is one of New Zealand’s leading commercial law firms, and also one of the largest. We have over 330 staff, including 48 partners and more than 180 legal staff, in our Auckland, Wellington, and Christchurch offices.
We are a full-service law firm and proud of our reputation for providing expert, yet practical, advice across all areas of commercial law. We are a “plain English” firm.
We are a firm of specialists. Our clients do not receive employment advice from a general commercial litigator, construction advice from a property lawyer, or tax advice from a mergers and acquisitions specialist. Our large size means we can resource our teams with specialist lawyers in every commercial area. We work to attract and retain talented people to support this approach.
We have excellent international connections. We are New Zealand’s only member of Lex Mundi, the world’s leading association of independent law firms. We are a co-founder of the Pacific Rim Advisory Council. Our partners include members of the International Bar Association and the Inter-Pacific Bar Association.
