Chris Chatfield specialises in Goods in Transit work (primarily road and ocean carriage), policy disputes, insurance litigation and the drafting of commercial contracts (such as distribution agreements and forwarders’ standard trading conditions). His goods in transit work includes both recoveries and liability work.

I joined Waltons & Morse in July 1999 having qualified as a solicitor in December 1997. I have a Masters Degree in International Commercial Law from the University of Nottingham and wrote my thesis on title to sue in respect of the carriage of goods by sea.

My practice consists of goods in transit claims (principally by road and sea, but also air and rail freight) and marine and liability insurance. I also specialise in warehouse claims defending and pursuing claims in relation to damage and loss to cargo arising from theft, floods, fires and other such causes.

My work regarding carriage of goods includes both claims and liability work involving both domestic and international carriage. .

I have represented stevedores and freight and port terminals in regard to claims by cargo interests, equipment claims and general liability issues.

I also advise and act on behalf of both insurers and insureds with regard to insurance policy issues. I specialise in cargo and freight liability policies. I have been responsible for drafting policies in this area for several of the leading insurers. I have advised a number of carriers, cargo interests and freight organisations on their liabilities arising from the importation of clandestine entrants.
