Aboriginal Law Practice:
First Nations, Inuit and Métis people in Canada have treaty or Aboriginal rights, including title, over significant areas of land. These rights must be taken into account when developing or financing natural resource, mining, energy or real estate projects. For more than 25 years, Fasken Martineau’s Aboriginal Law group has helped address and resolve our clients’ Aboriginal issues in Canada. Outside Canada, indigenous issues are equally important to our clients. We have assisted our clients in relation to indigenous issues in Central and South America as well as Africa.
With many of Canada’s leading lawyers in all areas of Aboriginal law and a broad range of resources throughout our offices, we help our clients better understand Aboriginal and indigenous issues. We have successfully concluded numerous agreements with and or on behalf of Aboriginal and indigenous groups. In some cases we have helped resolve historic grievances or paved a new path forward through treaty or commercial arrangements. When necessary, we have also successfully defended our clients’ interests in court challenges, injunctions and regulatory proceedings, acting on numerous landmark cases in Aboriginal law in Canada.
Fasken Martineau is a leading international business law and litigation firm. Tracing our roots back to the mid-1800s, our firm was founded through the merger of three regional Canadian icons in 2000. Today we have nine offices with more than 770 lawyers across Canada and in the UK, France and South Africa.
Our lawyers consistently receive accolades worldwide and earn hundreds of rankings each year from prestigious business and legal publications such as Chambers & Partners, International Financial Law Review (IFLR), The International Who’s Who of Business Lawyers, Canadian Legal Lexpert Directory, Legal 500 and others.
While we take pride in each of these acknowledgements, we take our greatest satisfaction from our clients who continue to entrust us with their most pressing matters. We aim to see legal issues in the context of our clients’ broader business issues. We have created a firm that is nimble, entrepreneurial and responsive to the global pressures facing our clients. Our success depends on the success of our clients.
