Antonio Hierro started his career, focusing on litigation, as counsel for the Spanish state, acting as agent for Spain before the Court of Justice of the European Union. He was legal advisor to the Spanish government during the negotiations for the Treaty of Maastricht (Treaty on European Union, 1992).
He later joined Cuatrecasas Abogados where he led the arbitration and litigation practice for 16 years, from its foundation in 1993 until 2009, and also performed as managing director of the firm from 2004 to 2008.
In 2015 Antonio left Cuatrecasas and founded his own law firm, Hierro Estudio Legal.
According to market commentators, Hierro Estudio Legal’s Antonio Hierro “is an extremely good lawyer with authority and full knowledge of international arbitration.” In his recent practice he has sat as arbitrator on matters involving Spanish, Venezuelan or Argentine law, including high-value disputes coming from a broad range of industries, such as the energy and pharmaceutical sectors.
Now focusing exclusively on international arbitration, acting as arbitrator or expert, he is considered by Chambers Global as “a leading arbitrator, Tier 1.” Named “Lawyer of the Year” (Spain) in litigation and arbitration by Best Lawyers in 2013 and “Lawyer of the Year” in Best Lawyers’ 2015 Madrid International Arbitration.
