Tommy Pettersson

Tommy Pettersson is a Partner in the EU and competition law practice group and co-chairman of the group together with Johan Carle. He mainly works as counsel for Swedish and international clients in connection with competition law litigation and complaint matters in Swedish courts, the EU Courts, the European Commission, the Swedish Competition Authorities and in arbitration.

He also provides advice in general competition law and works with the collection of concentrations for the European Commission and public authorities such as the Swedish Competition Authority. Tommy Pettersson has written several articles, and is a frequently solicited speaker in this field.

Joaquim Caimoto Duarte

Joaquim Caimoto Duarte is a counsel in the Lisbon office of Uría Menéndez-Proença de Carvalho, where he heads the EU and Portuguese Competition Law practice area.

He focuses his professional activity on European and competition law, advising on matters in various sectors, including the pharmaceuticals, banking and insurance, air transport, motor vehicle, energy, telecommunications, media and large retailer industries.

Joaquim is regularly involved in merger control and infringement proceedings for abusive conduct and restrictive agreements before the Portuguese Competition Authority, the European Commission and the EU courts, and also has ample experience in state aids.

Mariosa Vella Cardona

Dr Mariosa Vella Cardona is a legal consultant specialising in European Law, Competition Law, Consumer Protection Law and Intellectual Property Law. Based in Malta, she has been servicing the local market since graduating as a lawyer in 1997.

She was admitted to the bar in 1998 and in 1999 furthered her studies by obtaining a Magister Juris in European and Comparative Law from the University of Malta

After serving as a legal officer within the public service assigned to the Maltese Law Courts, she joined Ganado Sammut Advocates, a leading Maltese law firm, as an Associate in 1999. Within the firm, Dr. Vella Cardona dealt mainly with European Law, Competition Law and Intellectual Property. In the period leading to Malta’s accession to the European Union, she was also actively involved in the screening process of Maltese laws in order to ensure that the same are in compliance with the EU acquis. Dr. Vella Cardona has also been regularly involved in carrying out lobbying exercises with Maltese and European authorities on behalf of clients.

During this same period Dr. Vella Cardona was also assigned the role of research consultant within Europa Research and Consultancy Limited, a subsidiary company of Ganado Sammut Advocates. In 2005, she proceeded to take up the role of director within the said company. In this role, she focused mainly on the bidding for local and EU tenders and also conducted a number of seminars and reports for clients which entailed a detailed analysis of particular EU laws and policies. She was also involved in the coordination of various translation projects.

In 2004, Dr. Vella Cardona was appointed as an external legal consultant on European Law to the MEP office of Hon. Dr Simon Busuttil MEP. She holds this role to the present date.

Dr. Vella Cardona is also a visiting lecturer in European Competition and Comparative Law at the University of Malta. She is also a regular contributor to The Times Business Weekly, having her own column on European law developments.

In 2007, Dr. Vella Cardona moved on to set up her own legal consultancy firm and is currently providing legal consultancy services within her areas of specialisation. Aalto-Setälä Ilkka

Ilkka advises companies and governmental agencies on competition and marketing law issues at national and EU level, including merger control, abuse of dominant position, cartels, state aid and public procurement. Ilkka also litigates on a regular basis before the Finnish Market Court and the European Commission.

Ilkka has advised numerous domestic and foreign clients on M&A transactions and cooperation arrangements. Important authority bodies, such as National Emergency Supply Agency have also been among his clients.

Prior to joining Attorneys at law Borenius, Ilkka was a Local Partner at the Helsinki office of an international law firm and worked as the head of its competition law practice.

Ilkka has been a Partner since 2005. He heads the firm’s Antitrust and Competition Law practice group.

Ilkka has also worked for the Merger Task Force of the European Commission, after which he worked for Finnish Competition Authority preparing the entry into force of the domestic merger control.
