The Competition Law Practice:

The importance of expertise in competition law in Iceland has grown in line with the country’s evolving corporate sector. We pride ourselves in our team’s experience in the field as we have a strong team advising local and international firms alike. The firm´s experts lecture regularly on the topic at the Icelandic universities and in private lectures.

LOGOS has been engaged in most of the high profile cases that have been brought before competition authorities and the Icelandic courts for various clients, including alleged misuse of market dominance and unlawful cooperation of undertakings. Furthermore, our team has acted as adviser on a number of mergers, both domestically and internationally.

We are frequently asked to provide training and compliance programmes for our client’s employees and to review agreements and conduct for the purpose of ensuring compliance with competition law.

The history of LOGOS begins in 1907 when Sveinn Bjornsson, who later became the first president of Iceland, established the Counsel Office. The Counsel Office was also the first law firm ever opened in Iceland.

In the year 2000, The Counsel Office merged with another law firm called Adalsteinsson and Partners, which was established in 1969 by Ragnar Adalsteinsson. This marked the beginning of LOGOS which became the largest law firm in Iceland with a powerful team of lawyers and assistants who specialise in services for the business community using their broad range of experience on behalf of our clients in all aspects of business law practice.

As a part of the natural development of the largest and oldest law firm in Iceland, the London office was set up by Gudmundur J. Oddsson and opened in January 2006. For many years our firm has been instrumental in the expansion of the Icelandic economy as well as being the preferred partner of those looking to invest in Iceland. It was therefore a natural step for the firm to set up offices in London, which was and remains the most important financial centre in the world for Icelandic related businesses. The London office has grown steadily over the years and now has three partners and a total of eleven highly qualified lawyers who hold both British and Icelandic qualifications. LOGOS was the first Icelandic law firm to set up an office in London and remains the only Icelandic law firm with operational offices outside of Iceland. more >>

He further advises national and international companies on corporate law, on M&A transactions and distribution law. In all of the legal fields Ulrich Schnelle practises in he also represents clients before authorities and at court both in Germany and abroad. One of his particular specialisations is counselling clients on cross border operations, especially clients from English-speaking countries, from western and southern Europe and Asia.

Ulrich Schnelle studied law at the universities of Passau, Geneva, Freiburg im Breisgau (where he also obtained his doctorate in law) and at the University of Illinois, USA, where he was awarded the title of Master of Laws (LL.M.). Antitrust / Competition Law Practice:

Ever since the law firm was first founded, advice on antitrust law has been one of the main focuses of our legal activity. We support our clients on all issues of German and European antitrust law and on public procurement and state aid law– if appropriate in close collaboration with the law firms with which we cooperate internationally. We provide advice on M&A transactions, drafting contracts and, for example, also on drawing up and implementing antitrust and public procurement compliance programs. We have particular experience and expertise in representing our clients’ legal interests at European and national competition authorities and courts on all types of procedures and at all court levels. We have repeatedly prevailed on our clients’ behalf in administrative and judicial proceedings of fundamental significance.

Haver & Mailänder Rechtsanwälte:

Haver & Mailänder was formed in 1965 from the cooperation between Dr. Friedrich Haver († 1976) and Dr. K. Peter Mailänder. Today, we are a law firm of over 30 lawyers and one of the few medium-sized firms in Germany with national and international renown.

We advise and represent both German and international companies and entrepreneurs in all fields of national and international economic law. Our practice focuses on commercial and corporate law, mergers & acquisitions, antitrust and competition law, banking law and the law of the capital markets, corporate tax law, media and broadcasting law, telecommunications law and on all the ramifications of the law of intellectual property. Our areas of core competence also include dispute resolution in judicial and arbitral proceedings. The extensive theoretical and practical knowledge acquired by HAVER & MAILÄNDER over the course of several decades is being continually passed on to the generation of our younger, well-trained and ambitious lawyers.

As a medium-sized group of highly-qualified lawyers with economic expertise and other certified specialisations, we pursue a different concept from that of giant law firms. We consider ourselves to be a closely-meshed network of lawyers, organised as partners in a ‘law boutique’ with an absolute focus on our clients and their interests. Our advice is highly personal and individual, target-oriented and success-related. Our clients are each under the responsibility of one partner who is personally available as the constant point of contact. We always take an overall and concentrated view of problems.

Whenever necessary we form work groups comprising our respective specialists. At our regular meetings we discuss difficult or complex cases in a large group so as to fully exploit our firm’s overall expertise also in interdisciplinary areas of law. This concentrated work process has proved both effective and successful – moreover it is even economical for our clients.

As a consequence of Europeanisation and globalisation, business law has long since crossed national frontiers. The European law created by the European treaties and institutions in Brussels is applied both directly and indirectly to wide aspects of our economic life. HAVER & MAILÄNDER was early to identify this trend. Almost all of our lawyers already acquired knowledge and practical experience of European law during their legal education and are fluent in negotiations in English or French. We have had our own office in Brussels for almost 30 years now in order to account for the very special work style of the European institutions, develop the necessary contacts and encounter their highly-specialised civil servants on equal terms. With its specialists in European law, our Brussels office has established an excellent reputation above all in the law of state aid and in telecommunications law. more >>
